Geography

The island of Cyprus is located in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its neighbours at the nearest coastal points are Turkey 40 miles north, Syria 60 miles east, Lebanon 108 miles south-east, Israel 180 miles south-east and Egypt 230 miles south. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean. It is smaller than Sicily and Sardinia and larger than Corsica and Crete .The area of the whole island is 3584 sq. miles or 9250 sq. kilometres.

North Cyprus is some 100 miles long, 40 miles across at its widest point and has a total area of 1357 sq. miles or nearly one third of the whole of the island.

The geography of North Cyprus is characterized by a unique blend of mountains, plains and beaches. The Kyrenia Range, with its magnificent jagged limestone peaks, the highest of which is Mount Selvili at 3357 ft. runs along most of the north coastline to form a startling backdrop. To the east of the island the mountain range loses height as it extends along the narrow peninsula known as Karpas or `The Panhandle`. Along it are the best beaches in Cyprus. Miles of empty bays with pure white sand. To the south of the Kyrenia range lie the plains of Mesaoria. Here, is situated the divided Capital Nicosia (Lefkosa). Other major centers are Guzelyurt in the west of North Cyprus where most of the citrus produce comes from , The resort town of Kyrenia (Girne) is on the northern coast, and the second resort town of Famagusta (Gazimagosa) in the east.

North Cyprus Climate

Cyprus is the most easterly of the Mediterranean islands and is therefore the hottest and driest. In May the temperature starts to build up and in July and August is in the 30s - 40s°C (80 - 100°F) on the coast and a few degrees hotter inland. There is seldom rain from May to October and the sea remains warm from June to October.

In April the landscape is transformed into a marvellous blaze of colour, it can rain at this time for a day or two but it is usually wonderfully warm.

If sunbathing and swimming during the day, and dining outside in the evening are the essentials of your holiday, then we recommend you visit during May to October.

The winter evenings are cold but the days are clear and sunny with great views across to the Turkish mountains which can be lost in the heat haze of summer.

Getting There

You have options but we recommend flying to Larnaca Airport in the South and taking a taxi through the border to your Villa in the North

Getting Around

To fully enjoy your stay in north cyprus and to explore the mountains and beaches, the villages and restaurants, we strongly recommend you have a hire car, for at least some of your holiday.
Hire cars are relatively inexpensive, about £20 a day including all insurance, and you'll feel at home driving on the left! The minimum age to hire is 21 but some companies have higher limits. A UK or International Driving Licence is required.

We can arrange a hire car for you, small, medium, large or jeep. Let us know what you fancy. Despite a large number of hire car companies operating in north cyprus, it can still be difficult to find a car in the season so we would always recommend booking in advance.

You can hire a car from some companies at Larnaca in the south, and take it into the north. The insurance is not valid in the north so you have to pay for extra insurance at the border. This will be third party insurance only which is very risky. If you have an accident which is your fault or damage the car in any way you will be liable up to the full value of the car. Also if the car breaks down you will have to sort out the problem yourself, the hire car company in the south will be unable to help. Consequently we don't recommend this.

Buses and Dolmus (shared taxis) run to all the main areas, they are very cheap but the stops aren't obvious and there are no reliable timetables.
Private Taxis with yellow TAKSI signs on the roof charge an official tariff which is reasonable but you can't flag them down, you have to go to a taxi stand.
There are no functioning railways.
There are organised sightseeing tours to be found but a hire car is by far the best way to explore the island.
