St Hilarion Castle

GIRNE / KYRENIA

This horshoe harbour with its castle backdrop is often described as the most picturesque in the med. The carob warehouses converted into bars and restaurants spill out to the waters edge by the moored boats and create a superb ambience, especially at night    Much to explore in this busy town including the Shipwreck Museum in the castle, narrow streets & small shops.

BELLAPAIS

This is a historic village with wonderful views and is where Lawrence Durell wrote 'Bitter Lemons of Cyprus' in 1957. His old house is marked and you can enjoy a drink under the Tree of Idleness in the village centre opposite the Abbey.
The Abbey dominates the area and you can visit the ruins and enjoy the grounds. It is the finest Gothic building in Cyprus.

ZEYTINLIK

Zeytinlik is close to Girne and yet set in a rural and tranquil location surrounded by olive groves and beneath the spectacular St Hilarion Castle.
The village has several good restaurants close by and a couple of shops. A supermarket is also nearby.

OZANKOY

Ozankoy makes a good base being conveniently only a couple of miles east of Girne in the mountain foothills with small shops and some restaurants close by.
It has lovely walks through ancient olive groves in all directions but particularly up towards Bellapais and its Abbey.

ST HILARION CASTLE

Named after hermit monk St Hilarion, this picturesque castle was first built as a watch tower along with Buffavento and Kantara to give warning of Arab pirates attacking Cyprus and the Anatolia coast from the 7th to the 10th centuries.
Worth a visit for the spectacular views alone but be careful on the rough paths and steps.

NICOSIA / LEFCOSA

You can easily spend a day exploring the old part of this interesting city. The UN erected Green Line divides the city into the Greek and Turkish sectors and you will be curious to see this ugly barrier of barbed wire and corrugated iron across streets and through houses.
The walled part is easy to walk around and most of the main attractons are clustered here.
